Botox Wrinkle Therapy

Botox® is a natural purified protein produced by the Clostridium botulinum bacterium, which has been used in medicine for the past decade. Initially, it was applied therapeutically in ophthalmology, neurology, pediatrics, and urology. In recent years, it has been predominantly used for aesthetic procedures. Botox treatment is safe and one of the most effective and popular aesthetic treatments to remove so-called dynamic wrinkles that arise due to muscle activity in the areas of the forehead, around the eyes, and mouth. It is a simple, non-surgical, and painless procedure. Botox does not affect sensory nerves nor does it give a feeling of facial stiffness.

Treatment

After examining the facial muscles, with your consent, we will decide which muscles will receive Botox and in what dose. In our practice, we use BOTOX® and VISTABEL® by Allergan and Bocouture from Merz Pharmaceuticals. The treatment is almost painless as very thin needles are used. For the comfort of the patient, ice is applied before the treatment begins. Using fine needles, Botox is injected into the muscles. The effect is localized only in the muscles where Botox is applied, preventing systemic absorption. Botox works by blocking signals from nerves to muscles. The injected muscle relaxes, resulting in smoothing and softening of wrinkles. The skin over the injected muscle becomes shinier and smoother. Botox effectively removes forehead wrinkles, frown lines, and fine crow’s feet around the eyes. Additionally, it can remove nose wrinkles and lift eyebrows, lip corners, and tighten the neck.

Candidates

Individuals who have forehead wrinkles, vertical frown lines on the forehead, and fine lines on the outer sides of the eyes (crow’s feet) are candidates for Botox treatment. The treatment should not be performed if there is an infection in the areas where Botox is to be applied. It should also not be done on people allergic to any ingredient of the preparation. In people with certain neuromuscular disorders (ALS, myasthenia gravis, Lambert-Eaton syndrome), there may be a deterioration in treatment outcomes. In over 30 years of Botox use in medicine, no serious allergic reaction has been observed. Given its long-standing application, we can confidently conclude that it does not cause any long-term side effects. It’s crucial to understand that Botox treatment is not permanent, but it is very safe. Botox is metabolized locally at the injection site and does not spread to other parts of the body.

Results

The effect is visible after a few days, typically between 3 to 7 days after application. Facial rejuvenation can be gradual and last up to a month. The durability of the final result varies depending on individual characteristics (in most cases, it’s between 3 to 6 months). In most cases, treatments are repeated every 4 months to maintain a youthful and fresh appearance. It’s essential to note that with repeated treatments, the aesthetic rejuvenation effect lasts longer.

Recovery

After the procedure, individuals can immediately return to their daily activities. Post-treatment recommendations are:

  • Actively make facial expressions for 4 hours after the application.
  • Do not go to sleep for 4 hours after the procedure, and sleep on your back that night.
  • Avoid any pressure on the face, as well as other aesthetic, cosmetic, and laser facial treatments for the next week.
  • Avoid facial massages, sunbathing, tanning beds, wearing motorcycle helmets, and diving for the next week.
  • You can apply makeup after the procedure but do so with gentle movements.

Side effects from Botox application are quite rare. Even if they appear, it’s important to know that their effect is temporary. The most common side effects include mild redness, swelling, sensitivity, or bruising at the injection site. Less common are headaches, respiratory infection, or flu-like symptoms. Very rarely, there are temporary drooping eyelids and eyebrows, dizziness, facial pain, and muscle weakness associated with the application. All side effects are temporary and do not last longer than a few weeks.
