Reduction of Double Chin

A double chin, often known as a “second chin”, arises as a result of collagen and neck muscle weakening, and fat accumulation. There are several reasons for its formation: genetic influence, female gender, weight gain, skin aging, hormonal imbalance, and the intake of some medications. It undoubtedly represents an aesthetic problem, which leads more people to seek solutions to achieve a better contour and get rid of the unwanted double chin.

Treatment

There are several methods available to reduce a double chin. Each primarily targets one of the factors contributing to its formation – fat tissue, connective tissue, or skin.

Cryolipolysis is a method that permanently removes fat by freezing. Fat cells are completely expelled from the body through standard metabolic processes. Unlike other cryolipolysis devices where only two cooling plates are integrated into the applicator, the Cool Sculpt cryolipolysis cools through the entire surface of the applicator, 360°, making the effect better and treatment time shorter. The treatment is safe for surrounding tissue as only the fat cushion in the applicator is frozen while the skin’s surface is protected with a special membrane. Through this membrane, we suck the fatty tissue into the applicator, which cools to -10°C. Before cooling, the tissue is heated to make the treatment more comfortable.

Id duo sculpt is the latest technology for volume reduction and fat reduction. The focused monopolar radiofrequency works through electrodes applied to the double chin. Monopolar radiofrequency penetrates the deepest of all types and specifically targets fat tissue. The heat produced accumulates throughout the treatment, achieving a strong lipolytic effect. Besides reducing volume, it also tightens connective tissue, thereby tightening the skin. After placing the electrodes, the desired depth of action is determined by selecting appropriate parameters because different fat thicknesses require different approaches. Finally, the temperature is adjusted based on tissue characteristics and client comfort. The treatment lasts 20 minutes, and warmth is felt during the session.

Carboxytherapy is a method where carbon dioxide gas is injected under the skin, directly affecting fat destruction and stimulating the creation of new blood vessels. It also boosts microcirculation and oxygen flow, speeding up the process of washing away fatty acids, and promotes the production of new collagen that tightens the skin. Before application, CO2 is heated, making the treatment pleasant and painless. During therapy, you may feel slight pressure or pulsation and crepitations upon touch (a creaking sound when touching the treated area), which passes within a few minutes. Since it is highly soluble, CO2 quickly diffuses into surrounding tissues and is reabsorbed within five minutes.

HIFU, or high-intensity focused ultrasound, targets energy at the SMAS muscle sheath, providing solid support to the skin. It causes thermal damage at 60°C with the aim of natural healing, resulting in the tightening of the SMAS layer. After cleaning the skin, ultrasound gel is applied to the desired area. During treatment, there is a sensation of pricking and piercing as the energy focuses on a specific depth. This leads to a rapid temperature increase to 60°C and the creation of thermal lesions, resulting in natural recovery with the formation of new connective fibers. The special applicator used for double chins focuses on fat tissue, causing a lipolysis effect and forming connective tissue. This tightens the skin and neck muscles, improving the contour of the treated area.

The non-invasive Plasmage medical device, which operates on the principle of plasma energy, successfully removes excess skin on the double chin non-surgically and tightens the skin, making the double chin visually smaller. The device works by releasing small fractions of plasma energy at the tip of the device needle, achieving controlled thermal heating. Upon contact with the skin, small scabs remain that heal over several days. Due to the release of fractionated energy, excess skin sublimates (evaporates into the environment), and the skin retracts (tightens). The treatment is performed on locally anesthetized skin and is painless.

Candidates

Both genders can have the need for double chin correction, more often women, from all age groups. The treatment is most in-demand in middle and older age. Candidates for cryolipolysis are not those suffering from cryoglobulinemia, cold agglutinin disease, cold-induced urticaria, and autoimmune diseases that cause Raynaud’s phenomenon. The Id duo sculpt is contraindicated in cancer patients, those with pacemakers, and metal implants. Carboxytherapy is contraindicated in pregnant women, active tumors, infections and inflammations, photosensitive conditions like systemic lupus, taking photosensitive drugs, severe heart disease, and scar tendency. People with epilepsy, unregulated blood pressure, metal implants, skin diseases in the treatment area, and pregnant women are contraindicated for HIFU. Individuals with active inflammations, application site infections, pregnant women, pacemaker carriers, and those prone to hypertrophic scars are not candidates for the Plasmage device.

Results

By freezing the fatty tissue through cryolipolysis, the fat cells immediately crystallize. This leads to apoptosis (programmed cell death). The fatty tissue becomes necrotic, decomposes, and is eliminated from the body through the body’s elimination system. The process is gradual, so the first results are expected after 3-4 weeks, with final results after 2 months. A single treatment permanently removes 25-30% of the fat cells in the treated area. On average, 2 to 3 treatments are conducted.

Id duo sculpt treatments are done every 3-4 weeks, with a recommendation to have 4 treatments consecutively. From just one treatment, a local reduction of fat layers of up to 20% can be achieved. The first results are seen after 4 weeks, and the final results after 3 months since it takes time for the products of fat cells to be fully metabolized.

For full results with carboxytherapy, it’s desirable to have between 4 to 6 treatments spaced 2 to 4 weeks apart. Most people notice a difference after just 2 treatments. The final result can be expected after 2 to 6 months.

The result of the HIFU treatment is visible immediately after the session in terms of skin tightness and reduced wrinkles on the double chin. The final result is achieved after 2-3 months and continues to improve over time. It’s recommended to have 3 treatments spaced 2-3 weeks apart.

The Plasmage treatment achieves its effect just a few days after the first session in terms of reducing excess skin and improving tone. The treatment can be repeated after a month if necessary.

Recovery

After cryolipolysis, the treated area is temporarily red and pale, with sensations of burning, prickling, itching, and a feeling of fullness in the throat when treating the double chin. All side effects disappear within a few days. The treatment is completely safe. You can return to daily activities immediately after the treatment.

After the Id duo sculpt treatment, the area may remain red for a few hours. It’s recommended to drink plenty of water for several days after the treatment to help with the elimination of fat degradation products and to reduce the intake of salty, spicy, and fatty foods.

After carboxytherapy, slight redness can be noticed in the treated area due to stimulated circulation and oxygen inflow. It’s not recommended to immerse the treated area in water for 4 hours after the procedure. Mild bruises, swelling, and sensitivity might appear after the treatment, but they usually disappear in a few days.

The HIFU device treatment requires no recovery time and you can return to daily activities immediately. Anti-inflammatory drugs shouldn’t be taken 2 days before and after the treatment as they will affect the positive inflammatory process triggered by the treatment for natural regeneration.

After the Plasmage treatment, small brownish scabs remain at the points of plasma release, which go away in 5 to 6 days. During this period, the treated area should be applied with a skin renewal cream. For the first few days after the treatment, swelling of the treated region can be expected, along with the visibility of small brown scabs which fade after falling off. All changes are temporary and transient in nature.
